How can I use ideas and theories about new literacies and global learning to increase student learning in the social studies?
The New Literacies and Global Learning (NLGL) Graduate Program at NC State University aims to equip teachers with tools and skills to enhance students' learning through a focus on 21st Century Learning objectives coupled with technology integration, global awareness, and digital literacy development. Each course is designed to allow exploration into teaching practices that effectively meet the growing and changing needs of 21st century students. Using the model above, NLGL graduates synthesis their findings to create a project reflecting the novel and original ideas and theories discovered during their studies.
I found that my studies reflect a broad range of ways for enhancing authentic learning in the social studies. I distinguished five categories that represent the issues I tackled in my courses in the NLGL program:
